Setting Out for a New Climate Policy

On July 12, ECONtribute spokesperson Isabel Schnabel and the German Council of Economic Experts handed their special report on climate policy to Chancellor Angela Merkel. “The current debate offers a historic opportunity to change Germany’s fragmented, expensive and inefficient climate policy” says Christoph M. Schmidt, chairman of the German Council of Economic Experts. The Council calls for CO2 pricing to become the central instrument of a progressive climate strategy.

Call for Papers – Financial Intermediation in a Globalized World

Deutsche Bundesbank – IWH – ECONtribute – CEPR Conference on Financial Intermediation in a Globalized World

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 31 May 2019

The organizing committee invites submissions of high-quality theoretical or empirical research papers on financial intermediation. The conference calls for papers especially covering topics on financial intermediation and regulation.
The conference will feature plenary sessions with keynote speeches by Allen N. Berger (University of South Carolina, Wharton Financial Institutions Center, and European Banking Center) and Linda S. Goldberg (Federal Reserve Bank of New York and NBER) and a dinner speech by Joachim Wuermeling (Member of the Executive Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank).

Please submit your paper by the 31st of May via email to banking-research@bundesbank.de with reference to “Financial Intermediation in a Globalized World”. Economy class travel expenses and accommodation (both subject to price limits) will be covered for invited speakers and discussants.

Call for Papers – Heterogeneity and the Labor Market

Joint ECONtribute – IZA Workshop

Submission Deadline: July 01, 2019

The workshop will focus on the causes and effects of heterogeneity among workers, households, or firms on macroeconomic outcomes. This includes but is not limited to research on wage dispersion, heterogeneity in unemployment and participation, the roles of firms and technologies in shaping heterogeneity, labor market outcomes for females and males, consequences of skill heterogeneity, or the heterogeneous effects of technological change, demographic change, labor market concentration, and labor market institutions. Empirical and theoretical papers are both welcome. The workshop is sponsored by the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA) and the Cluster ECONtribute (EXC 2126) at the Departments of Economics at Bonn and Cologne.

We are happy to announce that participation has already been confirmed by Arindrajit Dube (University of Massachusetts Amherst and IZA), Iourii Manovskii (University of Pennsylvania), Hélène Turon (University of Bristol and IZA), and Abigail Wozniak (Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis and IZA).

Researchers interested in participating should submit a full paper or an extended abstract by July 1, 2019 using the Online Application Form. Decision of acceptance or rejection will be announced by August 1, 2019.

Isabel Schnabel elected as Vice Chair of the Advisory Scientific Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board

We are happy to announce that ECONtribute spokesperson Prof. Isabel Schnabel has been elected as Vice Chair of the Advisory Scientific Committee (ASC) of the European Systemic Risk Board.

The ASC Board consists of 15 experts representing a wide range of skills, experience and expertise. It contributes to the public debate on macroprudential policy by publishing reports. Past contributions include calls for: credible bank resolution; a European capital markets union; and enhanced disclosure of carbon-intensive assets.

The ASC Board meets quarterly in Frankfurt and publishes reports on a regular basis. Isabel Schnabel had already been a board member before and was now elected as Vice Chair. She is also a member of the German Council of Economic Experts, research affiliate at the Centre for Economic Policy (CEPR) and at the Max-Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods. Prof. Schnabel lectures Financial Economics at the University of Bonn, her main fields of research are financial stability, systemic risk and banking regulation.

ECONtribute Special Lecture by Andreas Dombret

“Minus times minus equals plus doesn’t hold for bank consolidations.” On Tuesday, 28th of May 2019, Andreas Dombret, former member of the Executive Board of the Deutsche Bundesbank and former Vice-Chairman of the Bank of America , delivered an ECONtribute Special Lecture on “Mergers and Acquisitions in Banking”. Faculty members, graduate and undergraduate students attented this special lecture. Dombret stated that there will be further shrinking, higher concentration and disruptive structural changes in the banking sector. Also, it is uncertain whether there will still be any banks in the future and what role they will play. It was a pleasure to welcome him in the Cluster of Excellence ECONtribute!

The event was jointly organized by the Exzellenzcluster ECONtribute EXC-2126 and the CRC TRR-224.

Denkfabrik Europa 2030

Europe 2030 –What are our young generation´s visons for the next decade?


The “Denkfabrik Europa 2030” brought student together to discuss and develop their ideas and visions for Europe in 2030.

The event, jointly organized by ECONtribute, Deutsche Post DHL Group and “Denkraum Soziale Marktwirtschaft, took place on 13th May 2019 in Bonn.

Participants came up with mesmerizing projects and future visions on the European Union in 2030. How can we foster a European sense of identity? How can we ensure safety for our citizens and provide them with a good infrastructure? How can we improve our parliamentary system? Shall we aim for “a European Republic”? And what about the economy and social security?

Students presented their projects to an audience of 120 people and four judges: Professor Isabel Schnabel (Spokesperson ECONtribute), Cem Özdemir (Alliance ’90/The Greens), Dr. Thomas Ogilvie (CEO Corporate Incubations at Deutsche Post DHL Group) and Dr. Dirk Aßmann (Director General of GIZ, German Association for International Cooperation). The winning team´s project “Europaexpress” aims to improve Europe’s infrastructure by introducing a “European ministry of transportation”.

Universitäten Köln und Bonn erhalten neue Fördergelder

„Die Kölner Universität hat im Wettbewerb um den Titel der Exzellenz-Universität eine weitere wichtige Hürde genommen. Alle vier Förderanträge der Hochschule wurden am Donnerstag von einer Expertenkommission bewilligt. Damit werden die Projekte (Cluster) in den kommenden sieben Jahren jährlich mit drei bis zehn Millionen Euro gefördert. […] Bewilligt wurden auch Anträge für die Projekte „Econtribute“ (Märkte und Public Policy) in Zusammenarbeit mit der Uni Bonn […].“
